Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Residence Halls rules?
The main things to remember are that UWest is a dry campus—no alcohol or recreational drugs are allowed on campus. Smoking is only allowed outside in designated areas.
Please see and familiarize yourself with the complete Residence Hall Guidelines here.
Remember that residence hall life is communal, meaning that we cannot do whatever we want as if we were the only ones living on campus. We have to remember that our actions affect others.
How and when are room assignments made?
Room assignments are made beginning a few weeks prior to the start of each semester.
What about the meals?
At this time, the university is not offering meal plans or full cafeteria service. Find more information under Food Services »
Where do I wash my clothes?
There are coin-operated washers and driers on the first floor of Hall A and in a small room behind Hall B.
How can I request a specific roommate?
You can indicate your roommate request as well as other special requests when you fill out your online housing application. Please note that for roommate requests to be honored, all of the roommates must request one another in writing.
If a student decides to request a roommate after submitting the online application, they should email housing@uwest.edu with their request.

What if something in my room is broken?
If you are having problems with the facilities in your room, you simply submit an online work order and our friendly General Services staff will repair the problem in a timely manner.
When can I move in?
Early arrivals must make a special request with the Residential Life Coordinator and be approved to arrive early. If the early arrival is approved, the student will be responsible for pro-rated daily charges until their semester contract goes into effect. While we want to accommodate your travel schedule, we also need time to ensure the rooms are clean and ready for your arrival.
What if I cannot go home during breaks?
No problem. The residence hall is open year round. The basic agreement includes the fall and spring semesters. However, a summer agreement is also available, and a supplemental agreement is available for the winter break period between the fall and spring semesters. The residence hall also remains open for the Thanksgiving holiday and spring break.
Can a student break his/her agreement to move off campus?
The agreement is a legally binding document. You are required to pay the full amount on your agreement even if you move out early. If you withdraw from the university, however, prior to the end of your agreement, you will not be penalized.
Can students bring a refrigerator?
You are welcome to bring a small refrigerator, or to purchase one once you arrive. We also encourage you to discuss any purchases with your roommates.
Is it possible for students to be employed in the residence halls?
Limited employment opportunities are available for Residential Assistants (RAs). iResidential Assistants receive a room fee waiver in return for responsibilities assisting residents and conducting residential life programming. Be on the lookout for postings regarding student employment opportunities around campus.
How can students decorate their rooms?
You are welcome to decorate your rooms, but please avoid putting up things with nails or adhesives that will damage the walls or cabinets in any way. Also, please discuss things with your roommates before decorating to avoid any conflict.
What appliances are allowed in the room?
You may have a hot water heater, coffee maker, small microwave, and/or mini fridge. Cooking in your room is strictly prohibited because it is a serious fire hazard. All cooking must be done in the Student Kitchen below the Recreation Room.
Are pets allowed?
You are welcome to have fish in a small tank, but no pets that can survive outside of water are allowed.
During semester and holiday breaks, may students leave their belongings in their rooms?
If you are not contracted to live in the residence hall for any period, you should be prepared to remove your belongings from the residence hall.
Who is responsible for a student’s property?
Remember that the university does not accept any liability or responsibility for your personal belongings. When you check out of your room, you are required to take all of your belongings with you. Anything you leave behind will be removed and discarded at your expense, where necessary, or become the property of the university.
Can I have overnight guests in my residence hall room?
Overnight guests are not allowed. Guests are not covered by the university’s insurance policy.
What fire safety precautions are in place in the residence halls?
The residence hall has a fire alarm system. If you hear the alarm, you must vacate the building immediately and meet the staff and other residents by the gazebo on the lawn. Also, smoking, lit incense, candles or any kind of open flame or burning items are strictly prohibited at all times.
What security measures are in place in the residence halls?
The main entrance doors to the residence halls are accessible by key card and should remain closed at all times to ensure everyone’s safety. Room doors are accessible by key and should also be locked at all times. Some rooms are equipped with lockable cabinets. You might want to bring a lockable box of some kind.
In addition, security cameras have been placed in the public areas of the residence halls.
