Hello, I’m April Afoa, the Academic Advisor for undergraduate degree-seeking students (everyone who has been admitted to a Bachelor of Arts degree program).
I am responsible to provide students with personalized advisement to facilitate their transition into the university, set academic goals, address academic concerns, strengthen academic performance, and obtain their degree. This will be achieved through meeting with students for one-to-one academic coaching, supplemental academic advising, and facilitating academic success workshops throughout the academic year. I work with departmental partners across campus to foster academic achievement and provide guidance and support as students make thoughtful educational choices. I can also help students to assess their interests, values and academic skills and to understand these in relation to discipline choice and potential future career/graduate school options.
I guide students how to navigate the system of procedures and requirements, academic processes and policies, and prepare students to take responsibility for making their own decisions about courses, academic programs and long-term plans. I additionally assist with implementing campus-wide initiatives that support student success, such as new student orientation, commencement, acknowledgement of honors achievement, and retention projects or events.
A high priority is working with students who have reached academic warning or probation to reaffirm goals, connect with resources, offer problem-solving strategies & regularly meet for progress checks. As the Academic Advisor, I develop and foster a close consulting relationship with faculty chairs regarding program requirements, course sequencing and scheduling and student progress, as well as with Deans regarding students’ statuses and petitions.
I can’t wait to see you in your grad picture!
