| Obtaining a Social Security Card |

You can only apply for a social security card if you receive employment. Initially, you can only work on-campus. After one academic year, you are eligible for paid internships which would allow you to work off-campus in a job relating to your field. After graduation, you are eligible for one year of full-time employment if you participate in Optional Practical Training (OPT). Garfield Ave. For On-campus EmploymentSince you are an international student, you will need a letter from the UWest staff/administrator hiring you. You also be required to see the International Student Advisor for a letter to give to the Social Security office. Forms and directions will be supplied to you upon your request. Once you have completed all steps and forms, you can go to any Social Security Office. Remember to take your I-20, passport and I-94, DSO letter, Employer letter, and completed social security form when you go. Lines can sometimes be long, so be prepared to wait. Once you apply, you will be given a receipt. Once you receive your number in the mail please bring a copy to the HR office. You may not begin work until you receive your number in the mail. |
