DSBCP participation at ECAI Workshops
Miroj Shakya, Coordinator of Digital Sanskrit Buddhist Canon Project has participated ECAI Workshop at Hong Kong Science Centre, City University of Hong Kong on May 27-30, 2010. The theme of the workshop is “Visual Analytics for Humanities and Arts: Charting the Course.” It is hosted by Centre for Creative Media and Department of Chinese Translation Linguistics.
The focus of this workshop was to plan the collaboration between ECAI and the CUHK Sponsoring Units. The process of visualizing data for pattern recognition including the potential of immersive environments is a research goal of the institutions. We have discussed about how to deal with a range of data including textual, archaeological, and cultural heritage materials.
16 workshop members have seen the new immersive lab theatres just being constructed by the Centre for Creative Media which is one of the main attractions of this workshop.
Shakya has attended another workshop at Fudan University, Shanghai on May 30- June 2, 2010. The theme of the workshop is “Cultural Atlas Construction and Planning,” sponsored by Library and Department of Geography of Fudan University, Shanghai. The workshop was open to institutions that are either in the planning stage for Cultural Atlas construction or having already begun the actual work. This workshop has given a platform to the beginners to show their own projects and open the door to collaborate with other members of different projects. A focus was on “Religious Atlases of Asia” including the proposed new project to explore seaports and maritime archaeology.
The workshop members have visited a one-day tour of the exciting Shanghai EXPO 2010.

A Message From Grand Master Hsing Yun

I am extremely happy to know that the Digital Sanskrit Buddhist Canon Project is broadening and applying the latest computer technology, thereby freely providing users to read and search through the UWest sponsored website. We began to support the digitizing of the Sanskrit Buddhist Canon since the year 2003. During this short period of time, this project has established its identity in the world. I wish great success for this project. Sanskrit Buddhist texts are extremely important for all the Buddhists. Now, for the first time in history, these basic valuable texts of Indian Buddhism are accessible and freely downloadable via the internet. The availability of all the Sanskrit Buddhist texts online will be an important milestone in Buddhist scholarship, and will make the project immensely useful to educators and students.
I would like to thank Dr. Lewis Lancaster, Former President of University of the West, Dr. Allen Huang, President of the University of the West, Min Bahadur Shakya, Director of Nagarjuna Institute, Nepal, and the DSBC staff for their hard work in bringing this dream project into reality.
Hsing Yun
